The masterplan of Artificial Lake Park of Tirana

The Tirana Park and the Artificial Lake is a 243.73 hectare public park situated on the southern part of Tirana. It includes an artificial lake which was build from the local waters (was charged by the lake of Farka with superficial canals) in 1955 on volunteer work, and many other landmarks such as the Presidential Palace of Tirana, and memorials to Albanian personalities and to World War II martyrs. The artificial Lake Park is one of the most relaxing places of Tirana. In the South-West of the Park there is the city Zoo and the Botanical Garden. Lately, the artificial Lake and the Grand Park of Tirana is the only remaining big green areas of the city. During the years of transition the Park was victim of many illegal building constructions, whose urban and environmental impact was very visible. Given that Tirana's only park does not meet the needs of its citizens, the Masterplan prepared by Atelier 4 & Bolles+Wilson proposes the park extension toward the hills of Tirana, thus almost doubling its area. The park's added area will receive the status of a protected area and will create facilities for the citizens of Tirana who will want to continue their sportive itinerary without interruption. This added green area will accommodate functions like hiking, cycling, horse riding, but also picnic or camping areas. The Master Plan of Tirana Lake Park, as a visionary document that guides future development for the site, works with existing site elements and characteristics with the intent of integrating new features that complement and enhance community functions and services. The entrance options, alternative modes of connection, are the beginning of the complex new choreography of the park - the parks spatial organization is conditioned by multiple choice - of route, of spatial experience, of degree of exertion; a choreography of multiplicity.
